A Galactic Nightime Spectacular

6/20/2025

When trying to do all things Star Wars, Disneyland has its own Fireworks Party dedicated just for the Star Wars fan.  This was an amazing experience with some unique galactic food items.  You get a prime viewing spot for two spectacular shows dedicated to the Star Wars fans.

Was this experience worth the hype and the $89 per person price tag?  That's the real question.  Let me share my experience with you and you can judge for yourself.   Let's take a look at the Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo Nighttime Gathering.
Picture
Picture
The most important aspect of this exclusive dining experience is the prime viewing spot for the shows.  You get the perfect spot just outside of Docking Bay 7 on the raised area across from the Millennium Falcon.  You can't get a better spot to see the Fire of the Rising Moons, where you get a different perspective on Disneyland's Fireworks show.   The music of Star Wars, with the projections and Fireworks is a great way to experience Disney's Fireworks.

You also get to see the Shadows of Memory: A Skywalker Saga!  Now this was an amazing show!  Disney knows how to use their projection mapping technology to turn the backdrop of Batuu's Spire into scenes from across the Skywalker Saga.
This show still makes me feel all tingly.  Now do you need this spot to see the show?  No, but like with any big show at the parks, if you want a really good spot to see the show you'll probably have to stake out a spot well before the show will start.  You can still get a really good view if you park yourself right below the ledge I was viewing it from.  But you may have to be there at least an hour before to grab that spot.
So what else do you get in this dining package.  When we checked in we were handed our special pin you can only get from this experience and then we got to have a few minutes to get pictures without any wait.

We had to get a few shots with our newly built lightsabers.  This photo spot is almost always occupied with a line of people waiting to get this shot, so it was nice not having to wait.
Picture
Picture
We also got a chance to peruse the menu and see what was being offered.  Now the menu mostly just exists to let you know what you will be eating.  You also get nonalcoholic beverages for free, but we did have to check out the wine and beer that was on offer at an additional charge.
Picture
Picture
The bento box of food items was an interesting mix of savory and sweet items.  The Cheeseburger Croquettes are just like they sound, little breaded deep fried cheeseburger balls, with a big mac-esque dipping sauce.  There were some nice meats and cheeses, I thought the little red cubes were beets, but were actually just a variety of red dusted cheese cubes.  There was a soft goat cheese with a bit of honey on it as well as some really interesting balsamic puffs.  Think a savory more solid version of cotton candy, it was a nice compliment to the cheeses, but not something you want to eat by itself, lol.
I'm not a huge fan of chicken salad, but the citrus ginger chicken salad in the little won ton taco wasn't bad.

Dessert wise we had a lovely little coco puff eclair like pasty.  You would definitely enjoy it if you like their coco puff cold brew coffee.  The little blue milk inspired pastry was pretty good as well, it was topped with a little lemon cream disc.
Picture
Picture
We had to try the cloud topped fruit soda.  I'm not sure what fruit it was supposed to be, but it was VERY sweet, which only got sweeter with the blue cotton candy on top.

There were two wines and two beers to choose from, which were okay.  My friend enjoyed his beer, though he thought Black Squadron Lager would have been a darker beer.  I've never been a big wine or beer drinker.  I prefer cocktails
Shadows of Memory is an amazing show and I completely recommend seeing it during a Disneyland visit!  This was just awesome!
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I really enjoyed the shows.  But I think if there had been seats and tables this experience might be worth it's cost.  Since we had to stand I was mostly leaning on the border wall throughout most of the show.  Granted we finished up our food pretty quickly to grab the best spot in our viewing area.

I would only recommend the Docking Bay 7 Nighttime Gathering if you want to avoid crowds and having to stake out a spot early.  Regardless we had an amazing experience.  As always we're here to help you figure out what is worth splurging on during your Disney vacations.  Remember, when it's time to plan for Disney:

Which Disney Is Right For You?

4/26/2024

ALL OF THEM! Well each Disney Resort or Cruise has something different to offer, so it's situational. Whether you're looking at a Disney Cruise, Disney World, or heading to Disneyland there are a LOT of choices to make. What you are looking for out of your Disney vacation can make a big difference on which one you choose as well as how long you have for your trip.  Follow along for more.
Picture

Disney Cruiseline

Picture
Two main reasons to consider a Disney Cruise:  1 If you have little ones who would love to meet characters without the hustle of the parks.
2 If you are looking for a relaxing vacation with the flavors of Disney, look no further than a Disney Cruise. No worries about rushing around and jumping on rides, you can take this as slow and easy as you like.
Disney cruises vary in length so whether you want a short 3-4 day trip or a much longer voyage there are lots of options.  They have a nursery for the smallest of tots and the various kids clubs will keep those over 3 occupied if the adults need some adult time.

Not to mention you can eat at fabulous Disney themed restaurants included with your cruise!
Picture
Picture
Also there are a LOT of opportunities to meet Disney characters aboard the ship or on Disney's private islands.  Characters' schedules are listed in the app and we rarely waited more than 10 minutes to meet with most characters.

TLDR
Want to RELAX and meet characters, pick a Disney Cruise!
Picture

Disneyland

You want a theme park with rides and lots of characters?  Then Disneyland is one of your better choices, especially if you have younger ones and want to dip your toes into the Disney theme parks.

Disneyland is 2 theme parks that are right next to each other with hotels and resorts located within walking distance. You don't have to worry about how to get to the park each morning since it's all so close. It's great for a long weekend since you really don't need more than 3 days to do pretty much everything.
Picture
Picture
All the classics are well represented in Disneyland.  You've got all the most memorable Disney rides, Star Wars Galaxy's Edge, PIXAR Pier, and Marvel's Avengers Campus filling two parks.

Plus some classic attractions that no longer exist in Disney World like:  Mickey's Toontown and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
With both scheduled character meet and greets and TONS of free roaming characters you will have plenty of opportunity to interact with characters.
Run into Disney, PIXAR, Marvel, and even Star Wars characters in their areas of the park.

Plus, if you want a lot of Marvel MCU characters Marvel's Avengers Campus is the best place to find them all.
Picture
Picture
TLDR:  Shorter theme park trip with plenty of characters, pick Disneyland!
Picture

Walt Disney World

Picture
THE BIG ONE!  Walt Disney World has it all!  You want a blow out trip for a week to go and do tons of Disney stuff?  That's Disney World!

With 4 theme parks and 2 water parks you can spend a LOT of time in Disney World.  It would be hard to squeeze all this into a short trip without skipping some stuff.
Each park has something to enjoy!
Want all the classics? Then you have to go to Magic Kingdom.

Toy Story, Star Wars, and Disney Junior? Hollywood Studios!

Eat and drink your way around the world and ride some cute interactive rides?  EPCOT!

Love Animals and Nature?  Animal Kingdom!

Plus there's always the two waterparks, mini golf locations, and Disney Springs for fantastic shopping and dining.
Picture
Picture
You really can have it all at Disney World! It's just spread out over the gigantic area that is Walt Disney World. You will have to factor in transportation each morning to get to each of the parks as most resorts are about a 15 minute bus ride to any of the parks.

There are a good number of set character meet and greets, but you won't find many characters roaming freely around the parks. There are also a ridiculous number of extra special activities that can also be booked during your stay.

With all that, it's no wonder that most people will try to spend a minimum of 4 days to do each park at least once.  Any less and you have to cut out a theme park.
TLDR. Have enough time to do all 4 theme parks?  Disney World is amazing!

There are probably a million other factors to consider when booking a Disney vacation but this at least gives you a starting point.

Let's Ask the Kids!

1/29/2024

Zoey and Niko are with us 95% of the time when we are traveling.  And we always keep them in mind when planning our vacations.  We specialize in family vacation planning after all!  If the kids aren't having fun, it makes the grownups not have any fun.

These little buggers have been hitting Disney since they were about 2 and 4.  So I decided I'd ask them about their favorite rides/experiences at each of the U.S. Disney parks.  Coast to coast, which rides did you like the most?  Here it from the mouths of our lil ones.  We'll go park to park and see what they have to say.

For context:  Zoey is now 13 and Niko is 11.
Picture

Walt Disney World

Gabe:  So I thought it would be a good idea for you two to let our Mouse O'Clock Blog readers know what your favorite rides were in each of the Disney parks. and maybe why you think it's the best.
Picture
Gabe:  So Zoey which ride do you love the most in Magic Kingdom?

Zoey:  Right, Magic Kingdom, my favorite ride in Magic Kingdom would have to be the Tron ride.  It was really cleverly designed and you go so fast at the beginning!  I really think you should get the lightning lane to ride it, it's worth it!
Gabe:  Niko, same question.

Niko:  My favorite ride in Magic Kingdom is Big Thunder Mountain.  Thunder Mountain is my favorite because it's fast and has lots of turns.
Picture
Gabe:  So what about Hollywood Studios?

Niko:  My very favorite ride is Hollywood Studios is Rise of the Resistance because it has a very good story while you're riding it and it's fun!
Gabe:  Zoey, Hollywood Studios?

Zoey:  In Hollywood Studios I think the best ride would have to be Smuggler's Run because I feel like there's no other ride like that in any of the parks.  It's a really unique experience and I love the fact that you get to interact and make your own story.
Picture
Picture
Gabe:  Last Park of Disney world, Animal Kingdom.  Favorites?

Niko:  My favorite ride in Animal Kingdom is the Kali River Rapids because it's a water ride.  It's one of the only rides you get wet on, so if't a hot day it's nice to go and get wet!
Gabe:  Let's talk about EPCOT, what's your favorite there?

Niko:  EPCOT, my favorite is Guardian's of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.  It's a lot of fun. At least it was a lot of fun for me.

Zoey:  EPCOT my favorite thing to do is actually not a ride, it's to go around the world and eat all the different food from all the different cultures.  I get that feeling since you get to try everything and thats something that's fun for me.
Picture
Zoey:   In Animal Kingdom, my favorite ride is expedition, Everest I really like that ride more than the shows and the safari.  I think it’s really cool to go backwards and see all that and then to go to the gift shop afterwards and see all the yeti things that are really cute.
Picture
Picture

Disneyland

Picture
Gabe:  Niko, same question, Disneyland favorite?

Niko:  Disneyland, Okay, my favorite ride in Disneyland is Space Mountain in May when it's the Star Wars theme.

Gabe:   So when it's Hyperspace Mountain and has all the flying X-wings and Tie Fighters with the Star Wars music.

Niko:  Yes!  That's my favorite, it's awesome!
Gabe:  What about Disneyland?  Which is your favorite over there?

Zoey:  In Disneyland my favorite thing to do is to go on the Haunted Mansion.  Especially when it is the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay.  I REALLY LOVE the Haunted Mansion!
Picture
Picture
Gabe:  Last one is California Adventure, at least until we go over seas to see the other parks.

Zoey:  My all-time favorite thing in California Adventure is to go to the Avengers area.  Really love all the rides and I love seeing the actors and the little shows that they have sometimes.  I just really love that area.
Picture
Picture

Gabe:  Niko, last question.  California Adventure?

Niko:  My favorite ride in California Adventure is the Incredibles ride.  Why it's my favorite...
It's my favorite ride because I like drops and it has a lot of drops like *thump* *thump*...
<makes a wavy up and down hand motion>
I swear these are the exact responses they gave me in our interviews, LOL!  I certainly did not expect some of these answers.

These kids are seasoned Disney veterans like their parents.  With as many times as they've been they've been able to try everything and build their own opinions.

V.I.P. is the Hollywood Way!

7/20/2023

Universal Studios Hollywood has the most spectacular VIP Experience!  The number of perks you get make it a worthwhile way to experience this classic theme park.  I only wish other theme parks did it like Universal Hollywood does.

Being only one theme park, it won't take you more than one day to really enjoy this theme park.  Consider that a one day ticket will cost you about $109 or $199 if you want Express Pass.  The VIP tour is about $369 per person.
Let me breakdown why this is totally worth it.
Picture
Included in this VIP Experience is your park ticket, Unlimited Express Pass, front of the line access for all rides, VIP seating for the WaterWorld stunt show, snack/breakfast spread, full sit-down lunch, bottles of water throughout the day, special backlot tour access inside the movie sets, AND A GREAT TOUR GUIDE!  Here's their marketing image but I'll explain further.
Picture

Picture
Before the Tour even begins, if you drove to the parks you get Valet Parking.  VIP's have their own little side entrance where you are checked in and taken up to the lounge area.

Here you will have a nice buffet of snacks and beverages while you wait for your tour to begin.  Small sandwiches, fruit, juice, and coffee are what you can expect.  It's definitely enough of a spread to qualify as a breakfast or lunch depending on the time of your tour.
Picture
There are also bottles of water for you to grab and take with you on your tour.  We waited roughly 20 minutes or so for our tour guide to show up,  Now this is not a "Private" Tour, there were about 12 people on the tour total, so you will be hanging out with some strangers for most of the day.
Picture
Picture
We did get to start our tour with the NEW Super Nintendo World that was just built there.  The Tour didn't include much time to wander and explore this area, but depending on the time of your tour there is plenty of time to explore the rest of the park either before or after your tour.

Our VIP access badge allowed us to go through the shorter line for the Mario Kart ride, even Express Passes aren't allowed on this ride yet.  Definitely a cool ride!  If you want more info on Super Nintendo World read our previous blog for a much more in-depth look at this part of the park.
Even though we had Express Passes, all the other rides in the park we were give "Front Of the Line" Access.  Our Tour Guide would take us around the line to get us right up to where the ride begins.  You definitely feel like a VIP when you skip 98% of the line to get on the rides.
Picture
Picture
If you've ever been to Universal Studios in Orlando you will recognize the majority of the rides.
There are a few rides and experiences that are exclusive to Hollywood though.  The Secret Life of Pets ride is really adorable.  You are pets waiting to be adopted and end up on an adventure along the way.

There is also a Water World Stunt Show that has some great performances.  A Kung Fu Panda 3D theater show and several other shows that are in the process of being changed out for other experiences.  They even recently announced they are working on a Fast and the Furious Roller Coaster to be added in the next year or so.
Picture
Picture
We had a very nice catered Lunch, though this may qualify as dinner depending on the time of your tour.  We had a lot great food choices along with desserts and beverages.  There was something for everyone on this buffet.

You also get a few characters visiting during your meal.  We had Doc Brown from Back to the Future and Lucy from I Love Lucy show up and chat with us during our meal.  Both performers were fantastic.  We had about an hour and a half for eating and then it was back to the tour!
Picture
Picture
We have done this tour twice in the last few years and both times we had INCREDIBLE Tour guides.  They gave us lots of info and taught us some pieces of movie magic throughout our whole tour.  You get A LOT more of that information during your Backlot Tour.  Our Tour Bus even had a cooler full of water bottles for us to enjoy along the way.
Picture
Now Universal Studios Hollywood is an actual working Movie Studio!  So there are actual functioning TV and movies being shot on the property.  Normal Park guests have a tram tour that they take through the Studio, but as VIP guests we had portions of the tour where we got off the bus and could walk around.
We stopped front of the classic City Hall with the Clock from back to the Future!  We walked through several out door sets, like the town square from The Good Place.

We had so much detail and movie history shared with us.  Explaining how some of the movie magic is done and sets are constructed.  Each tour can be a little different though as sometimes a crew will be actively filming in an area so you don't get to stop and get off there.
Picture
Picture
Picture
These two different spots on the tour were used in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.  Jack Sparrow hides in that little alcove behind a statue (the statue is gone) and picks up his drunken friend surrounded by mud and pigs in the other.
There are rides and experiences built into the tour!  This little bit of movie magic showed us a controlled storm/flood experience.

We go through some classic Universal rides that are no longer in Orlando like Jaws and EARTHQUAKE!  We also drive through the Fast and the Furious Ride and Kong: Skull Island.
Picture
The Tour also goes around several movie sets.  I forget which film the plane crash was from.  We also stopped off on pieces of the set from the film NOPE.

This an amazing experience for any film fan as you get to see real movie industry standards as well as learn a lot about classic cinema.
Picture
After our VIP tour we took some time to visit Hogsmead in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  The kids took some time to practice their wand skills.
Picture
Picture
The rest of our time at Universal Hollywood was spent going back over rides we enjoyed or hitting a ride that the tour missed due to time constraints.  But since we had Express Passes we didn't have to wait very long for anything.

I only wish Universal Orlando's VIP tour was run like this.  We had an AMAZING time, this is definitely the best and most efficient way to spend at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Mouse O'Clock is glad to help you plan out your next amazing adventure.  We try out everything firsthand to give you our best and honest opinions and everything in the parks.

It's a SUPER Nintendo World

5/17/2023

Our little Texas family made it all the way out to Hollywood California to checkout Universal Studios Hollywood.  They recently opened up Super Nintendo World and we just HAD to check it out.

I've been playing Super Mario since the original came out, so I'm a big fan.  Wow!  It was very visually stunning!  Lots of bright colors and backdrops really make you feel like you fell into a Super Mario Bros. game!

Since Universal is building its next big theme park that will include its Super Nintendo World, a lot of this review will give you a good idea of whats to come for Orlando in 2025.  So lets go over our time at Super Nintendo World.
Picture

Picture
Now I am not entirely sure how it's going to be setup in Orlando, but in Hollywood they were selling early admission tickets to be able to visit Super Nintendo World.  We of course took advantage of these tickets to get in bright and early.

Before we entered this part of the park we stopped in the shop to purchase a few Power Up Bands.  These cute slap bracelet style bands are used to collect coins and play the mini-games in the land.
At $40 each I will definitely be saving these for when the park is open in Orlando.  At least they can also be used to unlock some costumes in Super Mario Kart.
While the park was mostly empty we took advantage to play all of the mini-games that used our bands.  I will say that since they are slap bracelets, they had a tendency to fly of my wrist while I was playing the games.

The games are ADORABLE and fun!  Each game you complete gets you a key.  You need 3 keys to be able to access Bower Jr's area and play his Challenge Game.  Each game was designed to mimic some of the mini-games you'd run across in Super Mario.  They were all about timing and hitting blocks at just the right time.  The kids got a real kick out of playing them.

There are also blocks positioned all over the park for you to earn coins on your band.
Picture
Picture
Inside of Bowser's Castle was the one and only ride.  The Mario Kart ride was really more of a game, but was still really FUN!  The queue was loaded with items from the games and portraits of Bowser himself.

Imagine 4 of you are hopping into a Mario Kart with your own steering wheel and VR type glasses that let you see the other racers.  You drive around the track collecting coins and trying to hit the enemy racers with shells.
Picture
Picture

We donned our Mario hats while we waited to get in our Kart.  Once in the cart you attach the lenses like a VR goggle to the hat.  It was really cute but the game takes some getting used to.  Here was the video instructions for the Mario Kart ride.  It's easy to follow even without words.
Of coarse there were character meet and greets.  The lines were getting pretty long to meet any of the characters.  Their eyes are actually digital, so they would blink occasionally, which made them feel more real.

You are able to meet Mario and Luigi in one location and Princess Peach in another.  They're just ADORABLE!

The only thing we didn't get to do was eat at the Toadstool Cafe.  It looked really cute, but there was a virtual queue to reserve a table.  Those table reservations disappeared in the first hour of the park being open.  But I look forward to trying it out in Orlando whenever they open.
Picture
Picture
The whole land itself is really cool.  With only one ride it's not enough of a reason to come all the way out to California for, but still really cool.  The Orlando version is supposed to have at least one other ride, but we will have to wait and see.  If this is the kind of stuff Universal will be putting out soon I will be thoroughly impressed.

The early entry was totally worth it, because after being there for an hour there was already a LOT of people coming in.  I felt crowded and overloaded with all the noise of the games and people around.  I would not recommend being there midday with any child with sound sensitivities.
We had an amazing time at Universal Studios Hollywood.  We used a VIP tour which was great way to see and do pretty much everything all in one day at the park.  Super Nintendo World was pretty small, but very cute and engaging.

It really left me looking forward to Universal's  new park!  Let us know in the comments if you want to know more.  Mouse O'Clock is always happy to help you plan out your next amazing vacation.  We do book more than Disney. lol!

World vs Land

8/24/2022

Some people prefer Disney World, others prefer Disneyland.  I say, Why not enjoy both!  Both Parks have their strong suits, and some people really don't know what the differences are.  Follow me for a breakdown of each Disney destination, so you know which vacation you would like to plan for.
Picture
Picture
Clearly you can see the differences in the castles right from the gate.

Disney World is actually divided up into 4 major parks, as well as two water parks.  Disneyland is two parks nestled in Anaheim, California.  Which immediately gives the biggest difference:  How much time do you need to do everything in Disney?

Size and Accessibility

When you are planning a vacation, you only have so many days to spare.  Disneyland is loved by California locals, because it's so accessible.  You can spend a quick weekend there and have time to do pretty much everything you'd like to do.  Whereas, Disney World can take a good 4 to 5 days to see most of the parks, not including the water parks.
Picture
Disneyland
Here you can see the map of Disneyland.  You can see that the two parks are right next to each other.  You can walk from one gate to the other in a couple of minutes.  Even it's hotels are located within walking distance, with an abundance of other hotels across their parking lot.  The city is literally all around the parks, so it's very easy to get in and around.
Picture
Disney World
Disney World is practically it's own city.  Located 30 minutes from Orlando, Disney built their own World here.  If you are looking for something outside of Disney you'll have to drive a bit or have it delivered to you.

We refer to it as the "Disney Bubble," because once you pass through their gates, it's all about Disney!
If you stay at one of Disney's many resorts you have access to Disney's many transportation offerings to get you around within Disney World.  Each resort has places to get food and some are even located walking distance from a park, but outside of your resort there is very little that would be considered walking distance.

Parks

Disneyland is broken up into two parks.  You have the classic Disneyland and it's neighbor California Adventure Park.

Disneyland has all the classic rides we've come to expect from Disney:  Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, etc.  All packed around Sleeping Beauties Castle, which is the smaller of the castles.  Disneyland has a lot of rides and attractions all packed pretty tight in this park as their isn't much room for expansion with the city all around it.

Disneyland is also where you can find Star Wars Galaxy's Edge.  So even the Star Wars fans don't have to go anywhere else to get their fix.
Picture
Picture
California Adventure is located right next door.  Here you can find Avenger's Campus, Pixar Pier, and Cars Land.

There are more rides over in Disneyland but the rides located in California Adventure are some of my favorites.  The Incredicoaster is one of my favorite Disney coasters, Web Slingers is just amazing, and I always have a blast on Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout.
Now if you want to visit Disney World, that's no small undertaking.  With 4 Parks, there is just SO much to take in.
Disney World's 4 parks are:  The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom.

Magic Kingdom has many of the same rides as Disneyland with some minor differences. Pirates of the Caribbean isn't as long and Splash Mountain and Space Mountain have different seating arrangements than in Disneyland.

Magic Kingdom is more spread out, giving you more breathing room between rides and a lot more walking.  They also have lots of room for growth so Disney World gets new additions to their parks a little quicker than Disneyland does.

Picture
Picture
Hollywood Studios is the next most popular park.  Here you'll find Star Wars Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land.  There are some fantastic rides and shows here including: Rockin' Rollercoaster, Hollywood Tower of Terror, Slink Dog Dash Roller Coaster, Beauty and The Beast Live Stage Performance, and the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular.

Also the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser is located nearby and visits Batuu at this location.
Epcot is by far one of my favorite parks!  With all of it's great options for food around the World Showcase and it's many Festivals throughout the year We always have a great time at Epcot.

The rides are more focused on Science and Innovation, but there are so many little elements to keep the kids entertained.  And they just opened up the Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind Rollercoaster!
Picture
Picture
Last is Animal Kingdom.  More Zoo than theme park, but there are some great highlights here.  Imagine all the best qualities of Disney, but in a Zoo!  That's what you get with Animal Kingdom.

Home to Pandora, you can find all the cool Avatar rides here, as well as Expedition Everest.  There is also a really cool activity for kids to do based on the Wilderness Explorers from the movie Up!

Let's wrap it up!

Both Land and World have great features!  Land is better for a quick weekend vs World is better for a longer vacation.  World has a larger variety of rides and entertainment while Land has more characters freely roaming the parks.

We really love both of them!  It's Disney no matter how you slice it.  It's just a matter of which will work better for your current vacation plans.  Ask us any questions you may have, we'd love to help you put that amazing vacation together.  We offer free quotes and most vacations only require a $200 deposit to lock in that reservation.

Avengers Assemble on Campus!

7/15/2022

Picture
Not since the opening of Star Wars Galaxy's Edge was I so excited to check out a new area in the parks.  I'm a big Marvel fan, so when I heard about Avengers Campus opening up over in Disney's California Adventure I couldn't wait.  Sadly a pandemic slowed that idea down for just about everyone.

But we finally got to check out this new area over by Disneyland and I have a lot to say about it.  While not nearly as big as Galaxy's Edge Avengers Campus has some great things to offer.  So sit back and let us give you a tour of Disney's Avengers Campus.
Avengers Campus isn't very big, but they crammed it with locations that evoke the feeling of the movies.  There are areas dedicated to certain heroes like the WEB Institute is obviously Spider-man flavored, while another is clearly mystical and leans towards characters like Dr. Strange and the Scarlet Witch.

Characters, Characters, Characters!

Just like in Disneyland, the Marvel characters can just randomly pop up all over the Avengers Campus.  From showing up on a balcony to just walking around the park, you really will run into a LOT of heroes if you spend time here.

Avengers Campus is considered its own pocket universe so all the MCU characters exist here regardless of their deaths in the movies, so you'll still find Ironman and Black Widow walking around.  Plus they keep very up to date with the Marvel shows and movies, so newer characters like America Chavez and Ms. Marvel are already making appearances.  Just about every MCU hero can be found at one time or another.
Picture
There are a few shows here that you have to stop and enjoy.  They are on a schedule, so you have to keep an eye out for when these shows start so you can get there early enough for a good spot.  You can't miss the Spider-man performance, as he webs flips his way over a few buildings.  And the Dr. Strange show is pretty spectacular.  Here are some clips from both.

Great Rides!

I absolutely love both rides in Avengers Campus.  WEB Slingers is a fantastic 3D shooter style ride where your job is to web up the pesky malfunctioning Spider-Bots.  Unfortunately the ride isn't included in Genie+, but we found that the wait for this ride wasn't long later in the day.  My son loved the ride so much that he had to bring one of the remote-controlled Spider-Bots home with us.

The effects on the ride are great and the 3D technology is really well done.  I sometimes feel some motion sickness from 3D rides, but this one was pretty flawless.  Tom Holland's performance in the intro is sweet and fits with his whole MCU Spider-man vibe.
Guardians of the Galaxy Mission:  Breakout is SO MUCH FUN!  I know that it's mostly a reskin of the class Hollywood Tower of Terror ride, but I feel that it's an amazing improvement on the old ride.  Take all the creepy  horror and replace it with a whole lot of Guardians fun!

With different songs from Star Lord's playlist, each elevator gives you great scenes of the Guardians trying to save the day and break out of the Collector's collection.  I'm not a fan of elevator drop style rides, but Guardians is so much fun that its the exception to the rule for me.  The drops are still a little intense of younger riders, but we still convince Niko to go with us every time.

Even Heroes need to Eat!

Picture
There are few places to find food while visiting the Avengers Campus.  The biggest and easiest to find is the PYM Test Kitchen.  Home to some scientifically enlarged foods, there are several things worth testing out for yourself.  From GIANT Chicken sandwiches to over-sized Candy Bars the food can definitely satisfy the hungry.  They even have cocktails served in PYM beakers.

There is also Terran Treats located by the Guardians ride.  This is more of a popcorn stand with a few other sweet treat options.
And of course there is a Shawarma Cart located in the center of Avengers Campus.  Like the scene at the end of the first Avengers movie, where the heroes enjoy Shawarma after saving New York.

If you've got an MCU fan, there is plenty to see and enjoy at Avengers Campus.  It's only a part of Disney's California Adventure so you'll still have plenty during your visit to this park.  We had a Marvelous time.  Ask us about planning your own adventure over in Anaheim, California.  When it's time to plan for Disney:

Genie+ Breakdown

6/9/2022

We get a lot of questions from clients on how Genie and Lightning Lanes work. Between Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lanes, and Individual Attraction Lightning Lanes it can get a little confusing.  But that's what we are here for, so sit back and let me show you what you get when you decide to purchase Genie+ for your day at Disney.

We've tested Genie+ at both Disney World and DisneyLand and you'd be surprised to know that they aren't the same.  I'll break down the differences as we go.
Picture
Disney Genie is a new feature that has been added to your Disney World and Disneyland Apps.  It's a feature that helps you set up and plan your priorities while at Disney.  You can go into the app and set preferences for what types of rides and characters you want to experience.  It's a pretty cool little system, but it takes some playing around with the app to understand it all.
Picture
Genie+ is the paid add-on for Disney Genie.  Genie+ costs $15 per person, per ticket day and gets you access to Lightning Lanes on your park visit.

Genie+ has to be purchased the day you will be entering the park.  You can purchase it as early as Midnight the day of.  Disney recently eliminated the ability to pre-purchase Genie+ for your trip.
Gone are the days of FastPasses, now it's all about the Lightning Lane (LL).  Genie+ allows you to be able to book time slots to use Lightning Lanes at MOST attractions.  I say most because at each Disney Park there will be 1 or 2 attractions that are not included in Genie+.  Of course these are the most popular rides that are separate as Individual Attraction Lightning Lanes (IALL).  These are purchased separately as an in-app purchase.  Each ride will cost between $7 and $15 per person.
Grabbing a Lightning Lane or Individual Attraction Lightning Lane is pretty simple.  In your Genie Tip Board it will show you an alphabetical list of all the rides.  You'll be able to see the current Wait Times for the regular, Standby Lines.

If Lightning Lanes are available for that ride it will be listed right underneath with the next available Lightning Lane.

If it is an Individual Attraction Lightning Lane you will see the Purchase Price listed within the bar.  In the picture you can see the Web Slingers ride is $12 per person.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE GENIE+ TO BE ABLE TO PURCHASE INDIVIDUAL ATTRACTION LIGHTNING LANES.

Attractions and Shows that do not use Lightning Lanes will have their next Show Time or current wait time listed.

Once all Lightning Lanes are gone for any particular ride or attraction the Lightning Lane will show as Currently Unavailable and be grayed out.
Picture
Once you've selected your Lightning Lane you have a one hour window to get to that ride.  So your 11:55am LL is good till 12:55pm.  You can arrive a few minutes early, but I would avoid arriving late.   Important note:  You can only get one LL for each ride per day.  So once you have ridden Haunted Mansion using LL, you have to use the standby line if you want to go again.

Now that I've described the basics of Genie+ and Lightning Lane, now I'll break down the differences.

Walt Disney World Genie+

Picture
In Disney World you are able to grab your very first Lightning Lane at 7am.  If you are staying on Disney property you can also purchase up to two Individual Attraction Lightning Lanes at 7am as well.  If you are staying off property you'll have to wait till park open to grab those Individual Attraction Lightning Lanes.  It's  generally a good idea to grab your first Lightning Lane at 7am as many of the popular rides will be snatched up first.

The confusion for most guests is WHEN CAN I BOOK MY NEXT LIGHTNING LANE?  You are able to grab another Lightning Lane every two hours AFTER OFFICIAL PARK OPENING.  So if Magic Kingdom opened at 8:30am you are able to grab that LL at 10:30am, then again at 12:30pm, 2:30pm, etc...
You can also grab a new Lightning Lane every time you use one.  So if I get a LL for Pirates at 9:30am, I am able to get another one as soon as I scan into the line at Pirates.

If you are using Genie+ to it's fullest you can easily have 3 Lightning Lanes reserved throughout most of the day, this is known as "stacking'.  You won't be allowed to book two different LL's for the exact same time slot.  There can be some overlap, but it can't be the same exact hour.
Picture
If you are using Parkhopper you can book Lightning Lanes at other parks, but keep in mind travel time from one park to the other before you grab LLs at different parks.

Disneyland Genie+

Picture
Genie+ functions in many of the same ways over in California, but there are some significant differences.  Disneyland's Genie+ is $20 per person per day, but also include Photopass.  So you are able to get all those photo ops and ride pics included with your Genie+ purchase.

In Disneyland you can grab your first Lightning Lane once you have entered the park.  And you can grab that Individual Attraction Lightning Lane then as well.

BUT Disneyland only allows you to have ONE Lightning Lane at a time.  So it works more like a grab-and-go.  You grab that next one as soon as you've used the previous one and keep going!

General Tips and Tricks for Genie+

Using Genie+ doesn't mean you'll skip all the lines, but it can certainly help you shorten the amount of time you'll spend in those lines.

I will often keep an eye on standby wait times and use my Lightning Lanes around them.  So I'll grab a Peter Pan's Flight LL that starts in an hour, but try and ride a few nearby rides that will fit in that time.

Lightning Lanes will show you the NEXT available LL time.  If it's a ride you don't want to miss, or wait a long time for, it's a good idea to grab that LL time slot.  But beware of grabbing LLs that are soon that are on the opposite side of the park.  It's NO fun to have be constantly running across the whole park just to use a Lightning Lane.
Picture
Picture
The rides that are currently available to Genie+ can change, so keep an eye out for current lists of what rides are on Genie+ and which are Individual Attraction Lightning Lanes.

New rides tend to use the Virtual Queue system, but after a while will migrate over to Individual Attraction Lightning Lanes and eventually regular Lightning Lanes on Genie+. Remy's Ratatouille is a great example of a ride that started as a virtual queue, then became an  Individual Attraction Lightning Lane and now is part of Genie+.
Now that you've learned the ins and outs of Genie+, Lightning Lane, and Individual Attraction Lightning Lanes, you can take a deep breath and relax.  Besides, if you are booking with Mouse O'Clock Travel we are always glad to answer any questions or clear up any confusions you may have.

Angie and I are here to help ease your Disney worries and make that trip all the more magical!

Is Epcot Good For Kids?

3/3/2022

We get asked all the time whether Epcot is good for kids and honestly Epcot gets a bad rap when it comes to kids.  Disney has put a lot of effort into making sure that your kids will have just as good a time at Epcot as the grownups.  And, at this point, Epcot has become my kids favorite of Disney's parks.

For those unfamiliar, Epcot is divided into two major areas.  The front half is Future World and is filled with rides and experiences featuring innovations of science.  While the other side is the World Showcase, divided up into 12 countries each with their own shops,  eateries, and experiences.  We love Epcot for a bunch of reasons, but here we'll break down why the kids will have a good time too.
Picture
Picture

Let's take a Ride

While Epcot does not have a ton of rides and some you wouldn't even think twice about; there is a surprising amount of entertainment for the kids.

There are some top tier rides here at Epcot.  Any little Frozen fan will want to ride Frozen Ever After and visit with Anna and Elsa in Norway.  Remy's Ratatouille Adventure is an adorable ride the kids will fall in love with.  Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind is due to open this summer and it looks amazing!  But it's the touches in the other rides that will keep the little ones highly entertained!
Many of the other rides in Future World have interactive areas for the kids to play in after the ride.  When you get off of Spaceship Earth there is a whole area with big interactive video games that my kids just love.  There are all sorts of hands-on activities exploring your senses at the end of Journey Into Imagination with Figment.  My kids just love these weird learning opportunities in Future World.  My son was mystified by how food is grown when we rode Living With the Land.
Test Track is one of my kids' favorites.  They get to design their own cars!  They get ultra competitive about which of their cars will rate better throughout the ride.  Then afterwards, they get to do so much more with their cars.  They can race them around a simulated track and even make commercials for their car.  They just love the whole experience.
And I can never stop loving the goofiness that is Figment!  The kids get a kick out of him too!  Here's a moment from the Frozen ride, because you know the kids won't let you skip that one.

Let's go around the World Showcase!

The World Showcase is where the adults get to have a bit more fun.  There's usually a lot of good food and drink to sample all around the world ESPECIALLY during any of Epcot's Annual Festivals.  The Arts Festival, Flower and Garden, Food and Wine, and the Festival of the Holidays are just loaded with extras that make Epcot worth a visit.  But that doesn't exclude the kids from the fun out here.

Each of the festivals also has a scavenger hunt the kids can participate in. The kids get a playing piece that has stickers that match to each country. During the Festival of the Holidays we were on the lookout for little Olaf statues; he would be holding an item that pertains to that country's Holiday traditions. The kids would mark the country with the matching sticker. In the end the kids get a prize for completing the Scavenger hunt. It changes from from Festival to Festival, but we have seen decorative bowls, lenticular cups, puzzles, and other such goodies.

Also keep an eye out at each of the countries for Kidcot tables.  The kids can get a postcard and sticker for each of the countries they visit.  The Postcard has some fun facts about the country and a fun picture they can color.  It's one of the ways to keep the kids having fun while you get to enjoy the World Showcase.
Take in a little world culture while you're there. See some Taiko drummers and many other performances that happen all over the world showcase.  There's a lot to do in Epcot!
Each festival has it's own activities that the kids can have fun with.  From Art projects during the Festival of the Arts, cooking classes during Food and Wine, to Butterfly pavilions during Flower and Garden.  There's always something for them to do!

There's even a playground over in Future World if your kids still have energy to burn off!

Epcot can be open pretty late, but if your little ones can make it all the way to the end you are in for one spectacular lights and fireworks show.

Epcot's Harmonious is a pretty spectacular display of projections and fireworks located in the middle of the lake.  You can see it from anywhere around the lake, but some of the best views are from Japan in the World Showcase.

Epcot may not be for everyone, but we know it has a lot of great value for the whole family.  From cool learning experiences to touches of world culture, all sprinkled with that bit of Disney fun and magic.  We usually won't skip Epcot on our visits!

Disney Adulting is my Zen

1/5/2022

It's easy to fall victim to the old saying "Disney is for Kids." C'mon now, that's just toxic. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life. I'm here to tell you that YES, Disney is for adults and in fact, you can plan a kids-free Disney Adulting trip and still have a FANTASTIC time.
I did, and here's how that went. . .
Picture
Let me start by saying this was a Girl's Trip! My friend Daina and I decided we wanted a kids-free girls' weekend and thought Disney World was PERFECT for this. I know, you're thinking that going to Disney for a "kid-free weekend" is counter-intuitive because Disney is swarming with kids, right? Not necessarily true. There are quite a few perks and activities you can enjoy when you are sans kids.

Picture
Ride What YOU Want to Ride
When you go to a Disney park without kids, there is a feeling of relief. Sure, seeing your kids' eyes light up when they see their favorite character is a magical moment, but you know what else is? The freedom of not having to make the trip beholden to their desires.

It's ok to be selfish when you take some solo time at Disney. Ride the rides YOU want to ride, in the order YOU want to. If you have a Parkhopper or Annual Pass you can hop around in and out of the parks as much as you want to ride whatever you want. There is a certain amount of freedom and excitement when you walk into a Disney park without being tethered to a child.

Stay as Late as You Want - Especially for After Hours Events
Let's be honest, sometimes we call it a night because the kids are tired, but we could just keep partying! Some of the parks now have special evening hours when it is less crowded. For example, if you're staying at a deluxe Disney resort, both Epcot and Magic Kingdom have extra magic hours after the park closes. In these parks there are select nights when the park may close at 9pm but guests staying at deluxe resorts can stay till 11pm! That means an empty park for you to enjoy.

Another great opportunity to enjoy late nights is going to an After Hours party! We have partaken in Mickey's Boo Bash and Villain Night with the kids and didn't always make it to the end, but let me tell you, when I went with ADULT buddies we CLOSED DOWN THE PARK! This last trip, Daina and I did Mickey's Very Merriest After Party and it was awesome. There were tons of magic shot pictures, snow on Main Street USA, parades, fireworks, a dance party in Tomorrowland, a gazebo to meet Santa and even themed food and drinks. I have some amazing photos that you wouldn't believe are real! I'll have to do another blog JUST on that. It was so much fun, I went back to do it with Gabe and the kids, but it wasn't the same as doing it with Daina.

Shop Till You Drop. . . and then Shop Some More
Another perk of going to Disney without kids is stopping to shop whenever you feel like it. You can shop without being rushed because the kids want to ride rides. It's just relaxing and you can find some really cute seasonal things when you're leisurely checking out the stores instead of running inside for quick look while the kids grab a snack.

Adulting Disney Food and Drink
Disney isn't just churros and cupcakes. The parks and resorts are home to the full gambit of dining experiences from grab-n-go eating to fine dining. We chose to create our own Monorail Pub Crawl. Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. After hitting Hollywood Studios for a couple of hours we took a bus to Wilderness Lodge to start off our drinking adventure.

Our goal was to drink our way back to our resort. For this mission we started in Wilderness Lodge at Geyser Point, took the boat to Magic Kingdom and road the Monorail around, stopping at each resort to sample drinks and appetizers. It was fantastic! We were able to get our drink on at Wilderness Lodge, The Grand Floridian, The Contemporary and The Polynesian Resort. While Wilderness Lodge and The Grand Floridian had one bar each, the Contemporary and Polynesian had at least 2, which made for quite a night and a variety of drinks.

Another great adulting food and drink activity is going around the World Showcase at Epcot. You don't even have to ride any rides if you don't want to. In my adulting trips, we spend our whole Epcot day in the World Showcase going from one country pavilion to the next, shopping, grabbing something bubbly to drink and usually an appetizer-sized dish from the many festival booths to eat. When you're with kids, their focus tends to be on riding things, so you don't get a chance to really appreciate the detail that goes into each pavilion. You also rarely get to stay for an hour to do a tequila tasting in the Mexico pavilion or drink several kinds of sake in Japan.  Just the simple pleasure of trying the myriad of ales and lagers in Germany while eating a Mickey pretzel is priceless. These are all "boring" adult things that you can enjoy more easily when there are no kids around.

Disney Springs is it's own Adult Playground
I could go on and on about enjoying the nicer resort amenities like animation classes, crafting, horseback riding and even spa amenities, but those vary by resort. I will end with Disney Springs though. Disney Springs its its own veritable adult playground. There is Michelin 5 Star Dining, bars, live music, shopping and even a movie theatre there. You can have a fancy date night or a fun exciting bar-hopping evening with buddies. Disney caters to the fun-loving energy inside of us, no mater what age!!

Remember, when it's time to book your next Disney adventure, its Mouse O'Clock!
