GOOD EATS

Best food I ever ate...

We love food!  So much so, that part of our Disney planning is figuring out where to eat and snack along our day.  Disney knows how to make some very yummy treats.  Here are some of the BEST things I have ever eaten.

This list will definitely include  some of the food from our Disney cruises.  It would be impossible for me to make this list without including cruise food, because it was just TOO good to ignore.  I'm not saying that all food at the parks and cruises are amazing, but there are some foods that I never pass up an opportunity to grab while I am there.

Why have just another burger and fries when there are so many other options.  Over at Sleepy Hollow there is this delicious Sweet and Spicy Chicken and Waffle sandwich.  It has a yummy slaw and the chicken is coated in a sinfully spicy and still sweet sauce.  It's a great option for lunch or even a quick dinner.
If you've ever talked about food at the parks, I'm sure someone has mentioned Dole Whip.  Dole Whip is a great soft serve that is a blend of vanilla and pineapple.  It's very sweet and a classic staple of the park.  It does come in other flavors but the other flavors are sometimes seasonal or only available for a limited run.  Disneyland regularly carries more flavors, but they're still closed.

Dole whip isn't really my thing, it's good, but the Kakamora Float is AMAZING!  It's a coconut dole whip served with pineapple juice and blue curacao.  It comes topped with a chocolate cake ball Kakamora.  I could eat this at any time.  Find it at Aloha Isle in Magic Kingdom.  I'm sad when it's not available, but it's become so popular that it's almost a regular item.

Disney cruise lines has some great desserts.  That sticky date pudding I pictured in my intro was FANTASTIC, a top tier dessert.  The most highly coveted dessert of any Disney cruise is the Grand Marnier Souffle.

This delicate and delicious souffle was found on every Disney Cruise I've been on.  They know it's THAT good, so you'll find it on the menu at least one night of any voyage.  Grand Marnier is a light citrus liqueur that they use to make this great creamy sauce you pour on to and into this wonderful dessert.

We usually order more than one, because it is just that good.  Make sure and leave room for dessert this night, because it is worth it.
Lamb is one of those meats that some people shy away from.  It can taste gamey and isn't always delicious.  The rack of lamb is one of my favorite meals here.  I hunt for every last morsel on the bone.  It's just that tasty.

You can usually find the rack of lamb listed on one of the menu's of any given Disney Cruise.  I don't recommend every cut of lamb as I have found some to be too fatty, but don't ignore the rack.

Popping back over to the parks the Cheshire Cat Tail is a treat worth looking out for.  It is a braided chocolate croissant with a pink and purple drizzle cris-crossing its yumminess.

This one will be harder to locate as it's usual location is The Cheshire Cafe is closed.  Last time it was available at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe in Tomorrowland.
There are many yummy treats throughout the parks, my favorites all just happen to be in Magic Kingdom.  Some noteworthy treats are the Pongu Lumpia in Pandora at Animal Kingdom and the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich over at Hollywood Studios.  Some of the food in Galaxy's Edge is noteworthy as well.
I can never ignore the appetizer options on a Disney Cruise.  The Black Truffle Pursettes are these delicious earthly mushroom pastas in a creamy sauce.  I don't have the the words to fully describe how delicious these really are.

They can be found at least one night of most Disney cruises, so keep your eyes peeled for this one.

I am a huge fan of sweets, if you haven't guessed by my selections so far.  This one is only going to be found on the Disney Magic at Rapunzel's Royal Table.  The Fry Pan Sweet Bread is a simple but delicious treat.

Here we have a fried sweet bread dusted in powdered sugar, topped with a chocolate hazelnut drizzle and vanilla ice cream.  Plus it comes in a frying pan.  Who knew this could be SO good?
With so many delicious options, it's hard to make a wrong choice.  We'll be back in the parks soon and we'll keep you updated on what's good.  I always enjoy the food at any of the Epcot festivals, so we'll keep you posted.

Star Wars and Desserts, Yes Please!

You may have heard about Dessert Parties at Disney.  They are great way to see the finale light show and eat some sweets.  They cordon off an area just for Dessert Party attendees with free space ahead of you, so no one will block your view of the show.

Over at Hollywood Studios, you can book a Star Wars Dessert Party, and for a Star Wars fan like me, it was AMAZING!  After a long day or walking the parks and exploring Galaxy's Edge, it was really nice to sit down for a while.  You get to enjoy some nice drinks, sweet treats, and meet some of Star Wars finest characters.

These are things you don't want to miss!

You have to check-in for you reservation ahead of time over at the Star Wars Launch Bay.  When the party starts you are escorted to your reserved area in the Launch Bay.  If you haven't been in the Launch Bay before, it is filled with all sorts of Star Wars Memorabilia.

It's filled with display cases with items from all over the Star Wars saga.  You can see helmets from different eras.  Light Sabers of a wide variety of characters.  Models of some of you favorite star ships.  Plus you can meet with Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and BB8.

You don't need a reservation to check this place out, but if you do come for the dessert party you have exclusive access to a large part of it.
Before heading to my assigned table I had to make a quick stop at the bar.  They had a few mixed drinks ready and available.  They also had a few beers and wines on hand.  The Galactic Punch had a nice kick, though I preferred the Cosmic Citrus Twist.

There was so much food to enjoy.  There was a charcuterie table of meats and cheeses, but my sweet tooth got the better of me.  There were so many little tarts and Domes.  Many tasty little treats to satisfy any flavor pallette.  There was also a made order hazelnut chocolate dessert.  They would create the dessert right in front of you with liquid nitrogen.  It was delicious, like a Nutella ice cream!  Try the Blue Milk Panacotta!  It is way tastier than the beverage at Galaxy's Edge.
Picture
During the dessert party, Storm Troopers are wandering around the buffet table and walking over and interacting with guests.  They were looking for rebel sympathizers.  Making sure that the guests had all sworn allegiance to the First Order.

While they don't specifically stop for photos, they do oblige you if they see you are posing for a picture with them.  You get a lot more interaction with them here than when they are wandering around in Galaxy's Edge.

It was hilarious watching them bug guests and stalk around the buffet tables.  It's exactly what I would imagine real Storm Troopers would do, minus the shooting of rebels.
The lines for the character meets here aren't very long, but during the dessert party you really don't have to wait at all.  We waited less than 5 minutes to meet each character.  Darth Vader was intimidating as always.  He interrogated us about rebel spies, Angie tried to throw me under the bus as a rebel spy.

It was heart warming to meet Chewie.  The big guy made all matter of sounds we had to interpret.  His handler did try to translate a bit for us.  He commented on my shirt and asked how we were doing.  BB8 mostly just chirped and beeped from his pedestal.  It was still pretty cool to meet the droid.

Before heading off to see the Star Wars Galactic Spectacular to end our night I grabbed a bottle of water from the drink table.  As we were walked to our reserved location we were handed our Star Wars gift, a Darth Vader drinking mug.  The gift can vary from season to season.

We had a great time watching the finale for our last night at Disney World.  It's a wonderful way to finish an evening at Hollywood Studios.  For $89 an adult and $53 per child, it is pricey but worth doing at least once if you are passing through Holllywood Studios.

Dining Plans?  Yay! or Nay!

What are Disney Dining Plans?

Dining at Disney can be expensive.  If you are a foodie like us, you may want to consider grabbing a Dining Plan.  First let me break down what each Dining plan has to offer
Disney World offers 3 dining plan options you can select if you are staying on Disney property.  You have to be staying on one of Disney's properties to be able to opt in to a dining plan.

Each plan gives you meal/snack credits for each night of your stay.  All of your credits are front loaded on your account, so you could use them all as quickly as you want.  You can use these credits up till midnight of your checkout day.  The 3 dining plan options are:  Quick Service Dining, Standard Dining, and Deluxe Dining.

The Quick Service plan grants you 2 quick service meals and 2 snack credits per night.  The Standard Dining grants you one quick/counter service meal, one table service meal, and 2 snack credits per night.  The Deluxe Dining plan grants you 3 meals credits and 2 snack credits per night.  Deluxe credits can be used at either quick service or table service restaurants.  Quick Service and Deluxe credits can be converted into 3 snack credits, Table Service credits cannot.

You also get a drink cup that can be used at your resort.  It's nice to be able to grab a few cups of soda every evening when we get back to our resort.

$$ Is the Dining Plan Worth it? $$

The best answer is: Maybe.  Whether a dining plan will work for you totally depends on your plans and how your family eats.
Picture
My family loves to have character meals every day.  We like to eat at the fun unique dining experiences that Disney has to offer.  Dining plans totally work for us.  Character meals are not cheap.  Dinner at Crystal Palace is roughly $54 an adult while dinner at Cinderella's Royal Table range from $65-$80 an adult.  When you want to do all the special meals Disney  has to offer a Dining plan totally makes sense.

We are also big on planning ahead.  You have to book many of these restaurants well in advance.  My wife and I love to try new and unique food options.  The Dining plan just makes sense for us.
If you like to play it fast and loose and go in without a bunch of dinners, you could always go with the Quick service plan.  Just grab your meals and snacks on the go.

Another factor to look at is are you big eaters or just pick at your plate?  The Dining plan will get you a lot of food.  You could always do Disney as cheaply as possible.  Eat something quick for breakfast, bring sandwiches into the park, and only eat dinner at the park.  That's not the experience I look for when I go to Disney, but everybody is different.

Dining at restaurants also takes time.  If you want to grab as many rides as possible, then sitting down for a 90 minute meal may not be for you.

Just look at those faces!

Set and forget it.

Blue and Green Milk are just a snack credit.
I like to just go into Disney and enjoy myself.  I don't want to have to think about how much each food item costs.  Some snacks are easily $8  I feel like I lose some of the magic when I'm worrying about how much each meal costs.  I want to eat all the things!

If your family's needs aren't like mine, then you could just skip the dining plan.  With the pricing of food in the parks even getting the lowest dining plan can save you some money.  If you plan on doing it all like we do:  then the standard or deluxe dining plans can save you a bunch!  Especially if you go to one of Epcot's festivals like the Food and Wine Festival.

You can add a dining plan after you book your reservation if need be.  And we will always keep an eye out for those deals that will save you on your trip.  Sometimes Disney will offer free Dining plans or kids eat free Dining plan specials.  They are a great value but are only offered on select dates or have stipulations tied to them.  For example if you stay at a Value resort you would get a Quick Service Dining Plan, the standard Dining Plan for a moderate resort, or the Deluxe Plan staying at the Villas.  You can't mix and match without paying an "upgrade" fee.  These sales are limited so jump on them ASAP.  They can sell out incredibly fast, so we help apply them to your reservation whenever possible.

Ask us about other tips that could save you on your next Disney experience.

Dem Beignets tho..

Mickey beignets are elusive yet famous. They aren't found in the parks. If you've got a hankering for fried doughy goodness, head to Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at Port Orleans French Quarter resort. If you're already staying onsite, you're in luck because Sassagoula is located right near check-in.

This quick service restaurant is a cult favorite and accepts dining plan credits. The theme is Mardi Gras, NOLA of course.

We visited for breakfast and went straight for the beignets, although there were multiple breakfast platters available. We ordered our beignets with their signature chickory chocolate coffee ganache. It was thick and delicious and a fantastic compliment to the beignet--even for Gaby who doesn't like coffee!
Picture
Though we didn't stay for lunch, the restaurant is known for having create your own pasta, jambalaya, burgers etc. The restaurant also has a snack area to grab prepackaged goodies and treats. If you're on one of the Disney Dining Plans, you can refill your resort mug at the Coke Freestyle machines here.
Let's be honest though, it's the beignets that bring the mice to the yard. Not to mention the yummy other pastries available in the case.

Since they only count as snack credits, how can you say no? It's a value for both your meal credits and your belly. By the way, the pictures don't really show how LARGE these beignets are. We got 3 and had to split them between the two of us with a soda and a coffee for a filling breakfast.

And if breakfast isn't your thing? We got beignets for miles... even seasonal treats. Not only do they offer beignet sundaes but while we were there we saw the elusive and predictably delicious pumpkin spice beignet.

As if that wasn't foodgasm inducing enough.. they offer it as a pumpkin spice sundae. So imagine, warm crispy pumpkin spice beignet with cool creamy vanilla ice-cream, whipped cream and sprinkles.

Okay, stop drooling and go get yourself some!!
